With true knowledge and character we continue to maintain a mutual and beneficial relationship between Alcorn State University and her global alumni community.

Mission

It shall be the organization’s duty to support the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association and promote the enhancement of all programs and projects of the University.

History

Having satisfactorily completed all the requirements for affiliation with the Alcorn A. & M. College Alumni Association, Inc., the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Club was issued a charter on March 6, 1962.  The 1962 charter was only the fifth one to be issued by the Alumni Association, thereby making the Metro-Jackson chapter one of the oldest alumni chapters in existence.

Chapter meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m., with the exception of June and July.  Monthly meetings are currently held at the Jackson City Hall located at 219 South President Street – Jackson, MS.

It is the mission of the Metro-Jackson chapter to support the goals and objectives of Alcorn State University through student recruitment, alumni recruitment, financial support, dedication and loyalty of the highest standard.  The chapter has been dedicated to giving back to the university through fundraising efforts, community service, fellowship and recruitment.  The chapter has hosted countless fundraising events including:

A.   “Gentlemen of the Gridiron:  Thirty Years After THE GAME” – Held on October 16, 2014, at the MS Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, this fundraising event commemorated the November 4, 1984, football game between Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley State University.  Both teams were undefeated in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).  Alcorn State was victorious and defeated Mississippi Valley State 42-28 before an overflow crowd of 63,808 at MS Veterans Memorial Stadium.

B.  Alumni Legends’ Ball – A legend may be defined as a notable person whose deeds are much talked about in his or her own time; a person or achievement worthy of inspiring; an individual with larger than life accomplishments.  Members of the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter, Inc., planned the Legends’ Balls to  honor, salute and recognize Alcorn State University graduates whose accomplishments in their profession, service to society and most importantly service and support to the university have propelled them to legendary status.  Nominees are accepted from Alcorn alumni chapters throughout the country.

C. Leading Alcornites Under 50 – The inaugural Leading Alcornites Under 50 ceremony was held at the historic Fairview Inn on August 25, 2018.  This event recognizes Alcorn graduates ages 50 and under who have demonstrated professional excellence in their field and shown commitment to the University and their community.  If selected, each applicant must be able to raise a minimum of $1,871 for the ASU Foundation, Inc. This serves as the perfect opportunity to spotlight successful alumni while soliciting financial support for the University.

Established in 1989, the local chapters of Jackson State University, Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley State University (JAM) jointly agreed to “kickoff” the Mississippi SWAC schools’ football seasons with a joint reception.  The annual event serves to recruit alumni membership for each chapter.  JAM’s endeavor was expanded in 1999 to include each chapter giving a scholarship to a worthy student from the Jackson area. The scholarships are funded through the sale of raffle tickets by each alumni association.

The Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter, Inc., has been active for more than five decades. Boasting a membership of more than one hundred members, the chapter continues to actively recruit alumni.  One of the ways this is accomplished is through the annual membership drive, coordinated by the Membership Committee.  In addition to the above, an annual chapter picnic is held the first Saturday in June.
